This cynodont tooth originates from Upper Triassic strata (Bull Canyon Formation) in San Miguel County, New Mexico, USA.
The specimen is complete and unbroken, measuring approximately 1.5 mm. The characteristic serrated edges are clearly visible on both sides.
Cynodonts—roughly the size of mice—were early mammal-like reptiles. They gradually disappeared from the fossil record toward the end of the Triassic period; the precise evolutionary lineage leading to mammals remains unresolved.
Reptiles bearing a strong resemblance to mammals existed during the Triassic; however, the first true mammals did not appear until the Early Jurassic.
Cynodont teeth are rarely offered for sale; they are fascinating fossils from an evolutionary perspective and are an essential addition to any collection.
