Mesosaurus, Permian age reptile skeleton

This fossilized Mesosaurus skeleton comes from the limestone deposits of the Irati Formation in the Paraná Basin in Brazil.

Mesosaurus is an extinct genus of reptile from the early Permian period (Artinskian), approximately 290 to 279 million years ago.
Mesosaurus was aquatic and not particularly adept at moving on land. It lived in and around a vast lake or inland sea that stretched
across what is now southern Africa and eastern South America.

Fossils like this were occasionally available for purchase, but since Brazil imposed a strict export ban a few years ago,
unfortunately no specimens have come onto the market. We were fortunate enough to acquire this Mesosaurus during the liquidation
of an old collection.

The animal measures approximately 34 cm (the skeleton is slightly longer when stretched out). The stone is original and unbroken,
easuring approximately 41 x 18 x 2 cm. Hanging hardware is attached to the back.

This exhibit is a high-quality museum piece, it has no manipulations at all!
