This baby mudfish, Cyclurus kehreri, comes from the Eocene period of the Messel Pit in Germany.
The animal is very well preserved and shows great details. It is approximately 9 cm long
and is perfectly prepared.
The unbroken slab measures approximately 15 x 8.5 x 1 cm. It has a hanger attached to the back.
As with all fossils from this site, this piece was prepared using the resin transfer method for
permanent preservation.
Fossils from this site are rare and rarely offered for sale because the site has been under
strict protection for several decades (UNESCO World Heritage). All fossils on the market were
found in the late 1970s, and digging has been impossible since then.
Messel fossils are highly sought-after collector's items. The site has been inaccessible for
a long time. Finds from there are becoming increasingly rare on the open market. This specimen
comes from an old collection.
Juvenile specimens of these fish are rare!
