Bat, Messel pit

Here we offer a rare bat Palaeochiropteryx. It was found in the eocene layers of the famous Messel pit in Germany.

Messel fossils are highly sought-after collector's items. The site has not been accessible for many years.
This piece comes from an old collection, it was found in the 1970s.

As is usual with fossils from this location, this exhibit was prepared using the synthetic resin transfer 
method. This is the only way to preserve such fossils permanently.

The Messel Pit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and new finds have not come onto the market for decades.

The bat is preserved in great detail, you can even see some teeth at the skull. Nothing was added or "painted" - it is honest piece! The unbroken plate measures approximately 10.5 x 9.5 cm.
