This slab with Coelacanth fossils is from the middle Devonian layers of the Orkney Islands
in Scotland.
Interesting: there are two different Coelacanth species on one stone. The large specimen is
a Gyroptychius and the small animal is an Osteolepis.
Both fishes are complete preserved and have been prepped laborious - this is not a split
fossil, a lot of work went into this exhibit!
The Gyroptychius shows nice teeth, the fish has a length of about 38 cm, the Osteolepis measures
about 13 cm. The stone measures approximately 64 x 46 x 2.5 cm.
The stone was broken and has been glued professionally - no further manipulations.
Visually attractive museum piece!
