Gar fish, Atractosteus, Messel Pit

This gar fish Atractosteus strausi comes from the Eocene sediments of the world famous Messel 
pit in Germany.

The age of the fossil amounts to about 47 million years.

Such fishes are rarely offered for sale. The site has been under strict protection for 
decades - UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is quite a large individual, the matrix measures about 44 x 26 cm.

The piece comes from an old collection.
