Products description

Rarity from the Messel Pit: Extremely rare Hassianycteris bat with museum history!

Here we offer a scientifically high-caliber opportunity for demanding collectors: A fossil partial bat from the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit. The piece shows above all the long extremity and feet bones in a fascinating preservation.

The Messel Pit: A window into primeval times of world rank
The Messel Pit near Darmstadt is not without reason the first German natural heritage of the UNESCO. It is considered worldwide as one of the most important fossil sites at all. Around 47 million years ago, a tropical crater lake existed here. Thanks to the oxygen-free deep zones of this lake, animals and plants were conserved with a globally unique detail accuracy.

Professional preparation: The Messel plastic transfer method
Since the original Messel oil shale dries out in the air, splits and relentlessly disintegrates, all finds must be permanently secured. This fossil was professionally prepared according to the classic and proven plastic transfer method. Thereby the bones are exposed layer by layer on the visible side, embedded in epoxy resin or plastic, and the original, unstable shale is removed from the backside. Only this elaborate method makes the fossil durable for generations, stable and resistant against drying out. You acquire here a perfectly conserved exhibition piece!

Hassianycteris: One of the rarest bat species in the world
The absolute highlight of this find is its biological assignment. Experts and scientists of the renowned Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt showed themselves thrilled during the assessment! They confirmed that it is not the comparatively common genus Palaeochiropteryx. Due to the significantly more massive and larger bone structures, the fossil was identified as the extremely rare genus Hassianycteris. Such a piece appears only extremely rarely on the free market.

A millions of years old tragedy
The bones tell moreover a gripping, individual story: The animal exhibited a broken leg bone. This fracture was most probably the reason why the primeval hunter could not fly anymore and found its end in the lake. This visible pathology makes the exhibit a dramatic testimony of Eocene life.

Scope of delivery & details:
  • Exclusive bonus material: As a small gift a detailed cast of the piece is enclosed, which was once made by the previous owner. Perfect for comparison purposes or separate presentation!
  • Ready for presentation: Both slabs (plastic cast) are already provided with practical hangers on the backside. These can be removed very easily if required.
Secure yourself this exclusive piece of primeval times before it disappears in another collection!
