Tanystropheus Tooth on Bonebed - Upper Muschelkalk WuerzburgFor sale is a rare collectors item from the Germanic Triassic: A large, perfectly preserved tooth of the legendary prehistoric reptile Tanystropheus, embedded on an original and unbroken bonebed matrix.
This specimen comes from the classic Upper Muschelkalk (mo3) of Wuerzburg in Germany, a historically rich locality world-famous for its significant dinosaur/reptile discoveries.
Background on this species:Tanystropheus belongs to the most bizarre and fascinating reptiles in Earth's history. This lizard-like prolacertiform is famous for its extremely elongated, almost absurd neck, which was longer than the entire remaining torso and tail combined. The neck consisted of extremely elongated cervical vertebrae. Tanystropheus lived on the shores of the Tethys Ocean and presumably used its long neck like a fishing rod or a dip net to prey on nimble fish and cephalopods in shallow water from cliffs or the shore. Its sharp, slender teeth were perfectly designed to securely grip slippery prey.
Special collector's note on the extreme rarity:Finds of Tanystropheus belong to the absolute highlights in the Muschelkalk and are extremely scarce. While remains of Nothosaurus occur regularly, the verification of Tanystropheus is an absolute exception. An isolated tooth of this impressive size is an absolute rarity and the crowning achievement for any specialized Triassic collector!
A true "Who is Who" of the Triassic fauna on one stone:The bonebed is extremely rich and, in addition to the main fossil, offers a fascinating faunal community in the tightest of spaces:
- Main fossil: Tanystropheus tooth
- Associated find 1: Saurichthys tooth (the famous Triassic predatory fish / "predatory pike")
- Associated find 2: Various Acrodus teeth (prehistoric pavement-toothed shark)
- Associated find 3: Fossil fish scales
Product details:- Genus: Tanystropheus sp. (long-necked reptile), clearly identifiable by the typical smooth tooth base
- Size of the tooth: approx. 17 mm
