A friend asked us to offer this beautiful and rare fossil:
Placodus Metatarsale (metatarsal bone) on matrix - Upper Muschelkalk Wuerzburg
For sale is an absolutely high-class and museum-quality collector's item from the Germanic Triassic: A perfectly preserved metatarsal bone (Metatarsale) of the legendary plaque-toothed reptile Placodus, embedded on original limestone matrix.
This splendid piece originates from the classic Upper Muschelkalk (mo3) of Wuerzburg in Germany, a traditional locality known for its historically significant reptile finds.
Background on this fascinating species:
Placodus was one of the most bizarre and specialized marine animals of primeval times. This armored reptile was optimally adapted to life in the shallow coastal waters. Placodus is famous for its unique dentition: In the front jaw it possessed protruding teeth for grabbing prey, while the palate was lined with huge, flat crushing teeth. With these hard tooth plates, it cracked the thick shells of bivalves and brachiopods like a pair of pliers. Its short, powerful legs ended in paddle-like feet, which were perfectly suited for paddling over the seabed.
Special collector's note on extreme rarity:
The genus Placodus belongs anyway to the rarest and most fascinating marine reptiles of the Muschelkalk sea. While isolated teeth or vertebrae are found from time to time with a lot of luck, limb bones like this metatarsal are an absolute exception. Since the foot bones in the living animal were primarily connected by cartilage, the cartilage apparatuses disintegrated extremely quickly after death. An articulated foot bone or one preserved on matrix is therefore many times rarer than other skeletal elements and represents an absolute crowning achievement for any sophisticated Triassic collection!
