Rarity for Top Collections: Fossil Pterosaur Wing from the Solnhofen Plattenkalk
For sale is an absolutely rare piece of paleontological history: A fossil pterosaur wing (Pterosauria) from the world-famous German Solnhofen Plattenkalk (Upper Jurassic, Malm zeta).
The piece consists of a total of three associated wing bones in original articulated finding position. The largest and complete bone impresses with a proud length of 14 cm. A special highlight for connoisseurs: The joint ends are preserved three-dimensionally and lie exposed.
The entire limestone slab measures approximately 20.5 x 10 x 1.5 cm and can be presented excellently. There is a hanger on the back (can be removed easily). The stone was broken once and has been glued, no further manipulations!
Which pterosaur exactly could this be?
Based on the anatomy and the dimensions of the bones, these are highly likely the remains of a large Rhamphorhynchus muensteri.
The length ratios: In smaller genera (like most Pterodactylus finds from Solnhofen), the individual finger phalanges are rarely longer than 5 to 8 cm. A single phalanx of 14 cm in length requires a stately animal. Scientific data from large Rhamphorhynchus specimens show that their first and second wing finger phalanges typically lie exactly in this range of 13 to 17 cm.
The wing type: The graceful, slightly curved and hollow structure of the bone tracts is absolutely characteristic of this type of long-tailed pterosaurs, which cruised over the Solnhofen lagoons as skilled fish hunters during the Upper Jurassic.
