Rare Collector's Item: Original Fossil Vertebra of a Cymbospondylus
For sale is an excellently preserved, fossil vertebra of a Cymbospondylus, a gigantic marine reptile from prehistoric times. This rare piece originates from the Upper Muschelkalk of Neidenfels in Germany and is a highlight for the discerning fossil collection. Every collector for triassic fossils knows about the rarity of this species among found material, and most search for it in vain for a lifetime.
Finds of Cymbospondylus from the Germanic Muschelkalk are of extreme rarity. While other prehistoric lizards, such as the Nothosaurus, were native to this shallow epicontinental sea and significantly more common, the huge Cymbospondylus was an inhabitant of the open ocean. It appeared in these shallow coastal waters only very rarely as a proven stray.
Such a vertebra therefore belongs to the absolute exceptional finds of paleontology. With a diameter of about 4 cm, this piece comes from an impressive specimen and excellently displays the typical geometry as well as the fascinating, fine bone texture.
