The name of this prehistoric fish goes back to a historical peculiarity: Every single ganoid scale of Ptycholepis possesses fine, parallel running longitudinal furrows and foldings. In the 19th century, collectors and quarry workers aptly described that the fossil looks as if it were woven from black, glossy horsehair.
