Products description

Top Solnhofen Crustacean: Antrimpos speciosus MUENSTER, 1839

Description:
Up for sale is a beautifully preserved fossil of the prehistoric shrimp Antrimpos speciosus from the world-famous Solnhofen Plattenkalk (lithographic limestone).
The crustacean rests naturally and visually perfectly centered on a flawless natural limestone slab. This specimen stands out due to its excellent, natural color contrast between the dark fossil and the light Solnhofen matrix. No color enhancements, touch-ups, or artificial restorations have been made a genuine, clean and honest specimen for discerning collectors and museums.

Highlights of this specimen:
  • Preservation and Preparation: The fossil has been professionally and meticulously prepared under a binocular microscope. The animal is complete and perfectly preserved. Fine details of the carapace, segments, antennae, and legs are highly visible. Nothing has been restored, colored, or glued – this exhibit is absolutely genuine!
  • Size: The maximum dimension of the fossil (excluding the antenna) is approx. 9.5 cm. Fully stretched, the crustacean measures an estimated 15 cm, making it a very representative example of this species.
  • Matrix: The limestone slab is completely unbroken, stable, and in its original condition (not glued, not repaired).
Dimensions at a glance:
  • Fossil length (maximum dimension without antenna): 9.5 cm
  • Slab size: 20.5 cm x 15.5 cm
  • Slab thickness: 0.6 cm
Locality & Age:
Solnhofen Plattenkalk, Upper Jurassic (Malm Zeta, approx. 150 million years old). Eichstaett / Solnhofen region, Bavaria, Germany.
Note on investment value: Fossil discoveries from the Solnhofen Plattenkalk are becoming increasingly rare, as many historic quarries have been permanently closed in recent years. Access for preparators is highly restricted, which is why first-class specimens on unbroken original slabs from old collections represent a value-stable investment!
