Slab with footprints of RhynchosauroidesThis specimen is a stone featuring footprints of
Rhynchosauroides.
- Animal Group: Small, lizard-like reptiles from the Rhynchosaur group or early Archosauromorpha.
- Lifestyle: They were agile, mostly insectivorous land dwellers that moved in a sprawling gait (limbs positioned to the side of the body).
Geological Data:The find dates back to the Lower Triassic – specifically the Upper Bunter (Plattensandstein) of Wertheim-Diedenhan. The deep red color truly lives up to the name Buntsandstein (Plattensandstein).The German word Bunt means colourful.
Details of the Specimen:This hand-sized piece shows several footprints and potential tail-drag marks. The exhibit comes from an old collection; the label on the back also notes the horsetail
Equisetites as well as Einkolk (rootstocks/molds).
Dimensions & Condition:The slab measures approximately 20 x 16 x 2 cm. The most distinct footprint is about 3.5 cm. The stone is solid; a natural crack has been stabilized with thin cyanoacrylate (superglue).
