Products description

Here we offer a piece of so-called "banded iron formation - BIF." It is geologically very old – dating back to the early Proterozoic.
This specimen is an impressive 2.4 billion years old! The site is located near Kumuran in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

Banded iron formation is an iron-rich, marine sedimentary rock from the early Proterozoic, characterized by a distinctive layered structure.
Iron-rich layers alternate with microcrystalline silicate layers (Jasper).

Cyanobacteria which also form stromatolites, played a crucial role in its formation. The formation of these fascinating rocks is closely
linked to the evolution of life. Billions of years ago, there was no oxygen in Earth's atmosphere. The cyanobacteria began
photosynthesis and released oxygen into seawater as a byproduct. Over a long period of tome they enriched the atmosphere with oxygen,
essential for most living things,

Special feature "Tiger iron": This aesthetically pleasing variety, in which the ore is interspersed with tiger's eye and hawk's eye,
is found in South Africa. It is often used as a gemstone or for decorative objects.
The stone is unbroken and measures approximately 18 x 6 x 3 cm. It has been cut and polished, which truly
brings out the beauty and layered structure of this fascinating piece.

A highly interesting piece without any manipulations!
