Products description

For sale is an excellently preserved single ichnofossil of the species Batrachichnus salamandroides. This fascinating witness of Earths history originates from the famous red sandstone layers ("Ruffes") of the Permian Basin of Lodeve, France.

Details about the object:

Species: Batrachichnus salamandroides (attributed to early amphibian-like Temnospondyli).
The trackmaker: The tracks originate from small Temnospondyli (early amphibians). They lived millions of years ago in a muddy alluvial plain.
Characteristics: Typical features are four toes on the hand (manus) and five on the foot (pes).
Age: approx. 270 to 280 million years (Lower Permian / Autunian).
Locality: Lodeve Basin, Occitanie, France.
Features: The print shows the characteristic morphology with clearly recognizable toe tips. The matrix consists of the typical, color-intensive red Permian sandstone of the region.
Condition: Natural, unbroken and without artificial enhancements. The contours of the footprint stand out in relief from the slab.
Size: The handprint measures about 2 cm, the stone measures about 6.5 x 5 cm.

Background for collectors:
Tracks of Batrachichnus are among the classics of paleoichnology. They document the time when the first vertebrates conquered the continental plains. Due to their striking color and the historical significance of the site, pieces from Lodeve are represented in museums worldwide (e.g., Musee de Lodeve).
