World Heritage Specimen: Fossil pike relative (Cyclurus kehreri)

A Window into the Subtropical Jungle of Messel
We present an exceptional specimen of the bowfin genus Cyclurus kehreri. This fossil originates from the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site Messel Pit near Darmstadt, Germany, and represents the flora and fauna of a 47-million-year-old volcanic crater lake.
Product Details:
  • Species: Cyclurus kehreri (Amioidei)
  • Age: approx. 47 million years (Eocene)
  • Location: Messel Pit (Grube Messel), Hessen, Germany
  • Condition: Original fossil on a stable resin matrix with a pre-mounted hanger on the reverse side. You can display the item easily.
  • Scientific Significance: As a close relative of the modern pike (Amia calva), this "living fossil" relative is a key piece for understanding the evolution of bony fish.
  • Expert Transfer Preparation: Due to the nature of the Messel oil shale, this specimen has been professionally transferred onto a synthetic resin plate (transfer method). This ensures the long-term stability and durability of the specimen.
  • Dimensions: The fish measures approximately 21 cm; the plate has a size of approximately 24,5 x 17 cm.
