Here we offer you another rare find for sale. It is a human skull fragment, a gravel pit find that is
thousands of years old.
The paleoanthropologist to whom we presented the specimen was able to provide us with the following
interesting informations:
Right parietal bone, highly mineralized, almost completely intact; coronoid process completely preserved
and showing no signs of obliteration; sagittal process preserved without signs of obliteration; short
section of occipital process also preserved and without obliteration; the surface is very smooth and dark,
without erosions or changes; internal tabula smooth and without findings; clearly visible brain arterial
impressions. External tabula smooth and without findings; sex not determinable; age definitely juvenile
to at most early adult.
The specimen originates from a gravel pit (on the former course of the San River) in Poland. Many
Pleistocene animal remains, including those of mammoths, bison, giant deer, and rhinoceroses, also come
from this site.
The bone was found at a depth of approximately 15 meters. The specimen is unbroken and measures
approximately 13 x 12,5 x 4,5 cm. It is in its original, unaltered condition.
The specimen is quite heavy and highly mineralized. Its preservation is remarkably good.
Interesting: the vessel impressions on the inside of the skull are clearly visible.
Such bones are very rarely found. The extraction method on site has changed. Previously, in the gravel pit,
an excavator bucket was used to plunge into the lake and bring sand, gravel, and fossils to the surface.
Today this is done with a suction pipe and is fully automated. Many fossils are damaged in the process.
The workers now control everything electronically – they are no longer at the scene and only see the
conveyor belts from a distance. And if a larger piece, such as a giant deer antler, is spotted on the belt,
the workers are forbidden from stopping the process. Everything goes directly into the shredder and is then
sorted for sale. Unfortunately such wonderful finds are irretrievably lost day after day.
We expressly point out that this is a find many thousands of years old and NOT a recent bone. Its exact age
could be determined using carbon-14 dating. Dating would be easily possible because the bone is still in its
original state as found and has not been treated with any chemicals.
A rare find!
