Products description
This is a nautiloid (pearl boat) Lituites lituus. These fossils are colloquially also called 'Crosier'
The fossil comes from the layers of the Middle Ordovician (Lasnamagi Stage) of Oland, Sweden. The age of this deposit is about
462 million years.
Unlike the commonly occurring Orthocerids in that area, Lituites is considered extremely rare! Additionally, the possibilities for finding
them on Oland are very limited: In designated protected areas (such as parts of Neptuni Akrar or the Ottenby Nature Reserve), collecting
and taking fossils is strictly prohibited. Private possession: Outside of protected areas, the Swedish Right of Public Access (Allemansratten)
allows entry, but not the unauthorized 'removal' of stones.
High-quality collectible item:
- completely preserved animal (often such fossils are fragmentary)
- well-prepared
- nicely centered on unbroken original matrix
- protected location
- rarely offered
- no manipulations at all
The animal measures about 25 cm, the stone measures about 32 x 24 x 4 cm.
