The fossil is very well preserved, measuring just under 5 cm. The plate is unbroken and
measures approximately 11.5 x 8.5 cm.
A hanger has been attached to the back.
As is usual with Messel fossils, the piece was prepared using the plastic transfer method to
permanently preserve it – it is an original fossil!
Thaumaturus is one of the rarest fishes from the Messel Pit – only juveniles are known so far!
No manipulation whatsoever.
