Pterichtyodes, Devonian placoderm

This armored fish Pterichtyodes, comes from the Middle Devonian period of the Orkney Islands of Scotland
The fossil is approximately 400 million years old.

Interesting fact: Both sides of the split fossil are preserved, so you get two pieces.

The fish measures approximately 9 cm. One plate is unbroken, measuring approximately 13.5 x 12 x 1.8 cm. 
The second piece was broken once, measuring approximately 13 x 11.5 x 1.5 cm.

The fossil has been thinly varnished with a colorless varnish, which can easily be removed with 
acetone if desired.
