Products description

This stone contains a fossilized fish, Eolates gracilis.
The fossil dates back to the Middle Eocene (Ypresian) and is approximately 50 million years old.
The exhibit was found in the world-famous limestone layers (Alveolina Dainelli) of Monte Bolca,
located near Verona, Italy.
Monte Bolca is located not far from the village of Bolca and is also called "Pescaria" - fish bowl -
due to the numerous fossil fish found there. In a broader sense, the nearby sites are also collectively
known as Monte Bolca.

The area around Monte Bolca was uplifted from the seafloor twice during the formation of the Alps, once 30 to 50 million years ago and again about 24 million years ago. The site consists of a 19-meter-thick, fossil-rich limestone layer. Particularly well-preserved fossils are found in individual horizons. Not only are the internal organs preserved here, but sometimes even the coloring of the fish's skin can still be seen.

Fossils from this site are rare. The location is under strict protection.
The specimen offered here comes from the private collection of the Cerato family, who own the local quarries.

The fish measures approximately 19 cm. The stone was broken and measures approximately 26 x 21 x 2.5 cm.

Fossils from Monte Bolca rarely come onto the market - don't miss this opportunity!
