Products description

This is the extremely rare Permian fish Dorypterus. It was found in the famous "Mansfelder Revier"
in Germany.

Intresting in this species is the so called "sexual dimorphism" which was rarely described in the fossil
record. This means differences between male and female animals.

While "Dorypterus hoffmanni" with the long dorsal fin was probably the male part of this species, the
specimen offered here is a female individual "Dorypterus althausi".

Dorypterus fossils are extremely rare and interestingly it is mostly male individuals that are found,
females are almost non-existent. Many collectors only have fragments of this species in their
collections. Complete pieces like this one are absolutely exceptional finds.

The fossil is in the original condition - just as found - without any manipulations. If desired, the
contrast between the fossil and the stone could be increased with a little varnish, but we didn't
want to do that with this valuable piece.

The slab is unbroken and the fossil is attractively centered on the stone!

This is really a rare thing to buy - don't miss this opportunity!
