Products description

For sale is a real highlight for every collection. It is a stone with the skull and lower
jaw of the horse ancestor Palaeotherium. The fossil comes from the Eocene and was found in
St. Hippolyte, Ales / France.

The skull measures about 16 cm. The largest dimension on the lower jaw is about 18.5 cm.

The fossil are very well preserved in three dimensions, not crushed and have been
excellently prepared.

Fossils of horses are quite interesting, as the evolution of horses is relatively well known.
Palaeotherium had - according to the formation of the nasal bones - a movable "nose" like the
tapir, which they resembled in the construction of the limbs. These animals also had
three-toed feet and not just one like today's horses.

Rare museum piece! Do not miss this one, it is a one of a kind!
