A2 Oreodont skeleton

This Oreodont comes from the oligocene sediments (white river formation) of South Dakota, USA.

The skeleton is about 90 cm long (measured along the backbones). The matrix measures about 53 x 33 x 15 cm.

The animal is well preserved, especially the postcranial area. Unfortunately the skull is only on fair shape. All bones are original! The matrix was broken and have been reglued. Some areas of the matrix have been restored (take a look at the last picture of the backside of the stone).

As a characteristic this fossil shows easy recognizable bite injuries. Particularly  the right femur shows clearly visible bite marks. These traces are attributed to saber tooth cats.
