Products description

This large plate with many petrified fish comes from the upper Triassic (Noricum, about 220 million years old) from Wiestal near Hallein near
Salzburg in Austria.

Finds of fossil fish from the Triassic are great rarities. Salzburg was lucky enough to have a short-term digestion in the Wiestal near Hallein
containing the remains of these rare fishes. Their quality is unique and of international importance. The fossil-containing material was mined
until a few decades ago. Stone oil was extracted from the bitumen-containing rock (main dolomite). The Romans already used this stone for
floor mosaics 1500 years ago.

The fish plate for sale here is a beautiful and large fossil plate from the Wiestal. Such a rare exhibition is hardly offered for sale.

The stone contains several types of "ganoid scale" (Schmelzschupper) fishes for exapmple:

- Heterolepidotus dorsalis (new Paralepidotus)

- Ophiopsis attenuata

- Spaniolepis ovalis

- Colobodus ornatus

They belong to the group of bonefish that did not have bones at that time. The bones later developed from the ganoid scales.
These "ganoid scale" fishes were scientifically described in 1905 by Prof. Uhlig, Prof. Diener and private lecturer Arthaber from the
Geological and Paleontological Institute of the University of Vienna.

The stone is full of fish fossils. It is unbroken, measures about 68 x 31 cm and has a thickness of 5 cm. It weighs about 24 kilograms.

This exhibition is an absolute unique piece and was legally collected on private land in the year 1994. The search was only possible
for a few weeks, since then the site has been totally closed.

Shipping is possible worldwide.
